This set from The Body Shop is a perfect example of a product that earned a good first impression and had my hopes set high. I even included the moisturizer in my September Favorites. Now, the entire set is somewhere with Tuesday’s trash.
Let me explain. I purchased this set in September upon my first trip to The Body Shop because I was on the hunt for a good skincare routine for my combination skin. I purchased this set because - as the sales associate explained - it’s specifically formulated for combination/oily skin. I used it for a few weeks and was pleased with the results, specifically the moisturizer’s ability to control the oil in my T-zone (though, it didn’t completely eliminate it). After about two weeks, cystic pimples started popping up on my cheeks and chin. I’d get one every week and a half. One would heal and then another would appear. (Not fun, especially when trying to conceal them!) At first, I thought nothing of it as I’ve had cystic pimples on my chin before, though not as frequently. The blemishes previously turned up every few months, not every few days. This week, two more popped up and I began to reevaluate my skin care routine. This set fit the time line of the Great Breakout of 2011 and I determined that the pimples were most frequent when I used this set diligently, meaning that I used the moisturizer, cleanser and toner together and sometimes added the serum into the routine. So, the set has been banned from my skincare routine. It just didn’t work for me. I’m not entirely sure why. Maybe parts of my face don’t require products specifically made for oily skin and this line aggravated those areas.
I’ll end this by saying that this post is not meant to criticize this line, the products or their ability. (They might work wonders for you!) It’s more so a follow-up to my initial thoughts on this line since I included the moisturizer in my September Favorites and also wrote a bit on that product to a reader who asked about it. This post is meant to provide a lesson to both you and me - If you start experiencing crazy breakouts or a severe change in your skin, reevaluate your skincare, make-up or even haircare routine right away! Don’t wait two months, like I did!
