Review: Benefit They’re Real Mascara
On the first day I wore They’re Real back in August it was given the ultimate test: to last through an entire day of work, a concert and a long walk back to the 14th Street PATH station in the rain with a small umbrella for two. When I arrived home at around 11:30 p.m. after wearing the mascara since about 7:45 a.m., I was amazed to find no flakes atop my cheeks or smeared black lines under the eyes. I only found mascara where it was supposed to be – my eyelashes. The mascara lasted all day and my eyelashes looked as fabulous as they did nearly 16 hours earlier.
Needless to say, I was convinced that day that They’re Real truly is “beyond mascara” as Benefit refers to it. This mascara lengthens, separates, curls and delivers super black lashes that look perfect all day. The formula is long wearing and it doesn’t flake, smudge or smear. It’s never transferred to my eyelids.
Here’s a perfect example of its staying power: At least three times a week, my mind is elsewhere and I forget I’m wearing mascara. I rub my eyes ferociously after staring at a computer screen for too many hours and then worry once I remember I’m wearing mascara. But then I remember that I’m wearing They’re Real and realize I don’t have to worry because this mascara stays put and doesn’t flake even if I rub my eyes like a maniac. It’s that amazing!
Alongside this wonderful formula, there is a great applicator. The applicator is plastic and fairly thin, but the bristles are positioned in such a way that they allow for maximum coverage, length and volume. Plus, the applicator is outfitted with a rounded tip containing a cluster of bristles that serve to separate the lashes and grab the tiny ones at the inner corners of the eyes.
This mascara looks great with one coat or three. I generally wear one coat for everyday wear, but it’s easily buildable for a more dramatic look. The mascara helps to open my eyes and adds a little extra oomph to my look when I wear minimal face make-up and no additional eye make-up.
The shelf life on They’re Real is another perk. It lasts a full three months without drying out or getting clumpy. (Tossing mascara after three months is a general rule for hygienic purposes, so that’s my reason for highlighting that specific length of time.)
Because of its long-wearing formula, this mascara is difficult to remove. I use a waterproof make-up remover, either in liquid or towelette form. Because it’s necessary to avoid applying lots of pressure or force to the eye area, it takes a bit of work to remove the mascara. Usually a few swipes of make-up remover before bed does the trick, but I have found traces of mascara left on my eyelashes the next morning. This is not complete shortcoming as it shows that the formula truly does last and wears well for hours and hours.
If you can’t tell by this point – I really love this mascara. It’s the only mascara I’ve ever repurchased. It’s wonderful and completely worth the $22 price tag, in my opinion.
